Australians’ Want to
Boycott Japanese Products; Believe Government Should do More
Australian
adults overwhelmingly oppose Japanese whaling activity in the southern oceans.
Ninety three percent of Australians say they oppose it while only a tiny
proportion - two percent - say they support it.
Australians
also, albeit by a lesser margin, believe the Australian government is not doing
enough to prevent Japanese whaling in the southern oceans. Seventy percent of
Australians believe this, while only 15% think the government rather is doing
enough. However, there is a certain amount of uncertainty in the public’s
understanding and opinions on the matter, with a further 15% being unsure
either way.
Almost
three quarters of Australians (72%) say that they would be prepared to refuse
to buy Japanese goods and services to apply pressure on the Japanese to pressure
them to stop whaling. Women are particularly open to this, with 80% saying
they’d be prepared to boycott Japanese products or services while only 9% say
they’d not be prepared to do this.
