Half
of all Australian adults (52%) agree with Kevin Rudd’s recent apology to the
stolen generation of aboriginal people. One in three (34%) disagree with his
apology. The remaining 14% are either unsure or else neither agree nor disagree
with the apology.
Whether
they agree or disagree with the apology, many Australians feel quite strongly
about the issue. Amongst those who agree with Mr Rudd’s apology, more strongly
agree than somewhat agree, with 55% of those who agree with the apology saying
they “strongly” agree with it. Amongst those who disagree with the apology, 65% say they “strongly” disagree with
it.
Support
for Mr Rudd’s apology is strongest amongst younger adults aged 18-29 years.
Fifty six percent of people in this age group say they agree with the apology
while only 27% say they disagree with it.
